Kids4character is an organization of volunteers who believe that children can be tought values through literacy based assembly programs. These values should be reenforcing what children are learning at home.
Volunteers for Kids4character raises money for the Young Readers Council, a 501(c)3 non-profit charity whose mission is to encourage children to learn to read.
The In-school programs involve a thirty minute assembly program for early elementary school children. The subject is healthy lifestyle living, by making right choices including eating right, exercising, and staying in school. The new addition of "Character" training is a new addition to the program. Schools want children to make the right choice in life based on proper "character".
The assembly programs include visits by "Homer", the very popular mascot of the program. Children relate to a mascot type character that is larger than life, who also is the mentor inside they personalized book that is has been developed just for them. When children relate to the character and then recognize the same character in their book, interest levels rise dramatically.
The program also warns children not to use drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Finally, the program delivers a personalized hard cover book which children get to keep and take home. Sponsors who are featured in the books via endsheet advertising, make this program available to schools at no cost to the school.
In the end, children who take part in these programs are expected to show an increase in a desire to read, and an increase in awareness on making better choices to become healthy and successful.
The "Homer" program is targeted toward 2nd grade students.
